Yogurt Lovers listen up! I am so excited about a deal I got this morning at Food Lion. I paid only $.24 tax for 20 cups of Yoplait Yogurt! My husband and kids were so happy to see this, as they love yogurt. It was such an easy deal, so let me explain how to do it.

First, I must give a shout out and thanks to Barry B. from the Delly’s Deals Facebook page for sharing this deal with me. He is an awesome couponer and always finds the neatest deals.

Note: It just occurred to me that if you don’t need 20, you can do the deal with only 10 cups and it still comes out free if you only use one coupon, so keep that in mind (those of you with smaller families than me).

This deal is Super easy!

Buy:

20 Yoplait Yogurt Cups (several varieties; choose the ones that are on sale for 5 for $3 (.60 each) Your total will be $12

Bonus:

Food Lion will take off $10 at the register automatically as part of their Big Deal Promotion. Click here to read more about the Big Deal at Food Lion.

Your total will now be $2 (already a great deal).

Use:

2 of this printable coupon for $1 off 10 (coupon is from Target’s website but is a manufacturer’s coupon so should be accepted anywhere). Print two copies to save $2. Your total is now $0!

2013-03-22 07.25.42

Your total is $0 but you will owe tax of 2 cents per cup, so $.24!
2013-03-22 09.03.26Note: You must buy quantities of 10 or 20 for this deal to work so if at least 10 are not in stock, come back later.

BONUS: Some readers are reporting getting back a $2 Catalina (money for your next purchase) after they buy 20. So you end up making money here!

There were plenty in stock when I went but you may want to give the manager a heads up and suggest that he or she order plenty of Yoplait. They will probably keep it fairly stocked anyways since it is on sale, but just in case.

Also, if you can’t print the Target coupon, there is a coupon on my website here for $.40 off 6 Yoplait Cups, so you could use 3 of those (2 prints per computer only so use a second computer for 3) and you would save $1.20, so your total would be $.80 for all 20 cups, still a great deal!

The Big Deal promo is going on at Food Lion through April 2, so if the yogurt continues to be on sale you have almost two weeks to get this deal (don’t wait too late though because the coupon could disappear).

Let me know how it goes for you!

Get organized with a coupon binder! It will save you time and money (plus they’re super cute!). Click here.

Making Meal Deals Work for You!

I knew something was wrong when I had a dream the other night that I had missed out on this week’s Meal Deal at Harris Teeter! In my dream, the Meal Deal had actually happened last week but I had planned on buying it this week. I was so upset and my dream reaction was way over the top!

Although my dream was extreme, the Meal Deals really are something to get excited about. Harris Teeter leads the charge in consistent Meal Deals; they offer one most weeks. I have also noticed Food Lion and Lowes Foods sporadically offering Meal Deals, too, so it appears they are getting into the game.

For those who don’t know, Meal Deals are when the grocery store offers you a set of items that you must buy all at once, together as a group, in order to get an exceptional discount. Harris Teeter prominently displays their Meal deals in the store flyer, usually on the front or front flap. There are also posters throughout the store as well as a card at the register. Food Lion and Lowes Foods tend to hide theirs a little more, in my opinion, so you have to look inside of the flyer.

This week’s Harris Teeter Meal Deal is as follows:

Buy ALL of the following for only $5.99 plus tax: (limit one per family)

  • one (1) 15-16 oz. pkg. Ball Park Angus Beef Franks or New York Deli Style Beef Franks;
  • one (1) 8 ct. Ball Park Hot Dog Buns;
  • one (1) 7-8.5 oz. Cape Cod Potato Chips; and
  • one (1) 2 ltr. Coca-Cola Product

That really is a great deal! The beauty of it is that you can even use coupons on the items to lower the price even further! I hear there are coupons floating around out there for the hot dogs and for the chips, although I myself could not find any.

Just for fun, I decided to price these items yesterday when I was in Food Lion getting my $.99 per pound grapes. Below is what the Meal Deal would cost if you bought it at Food Lion:

Ball Park Angus Beef Franks: $4.99
Ball Park Hot Dog Buns: $2.49
Cape Cod Chips: $3.79
2 liter Coca Cola: $1.33
Grand Total: $12.60
Wow! What a savings! You would overspend by $6.61 if you bought the items at Food Lion.

I suggest planning a weekly meal around a Meal Deal or even if you don’t need the items now, get them anyway and save them because if you wait until later, they may not be on sale when you need them.

Be on the lookout for weekly Meal Deals as they really can help you save Big Bucks!

$.99 Grapes at Food Lion/Frugal Tip of the Week

People often ask me how to save money on fruits and veggies. The answer is fairly simple- buy them on sale. Like most other items, fruits and veggies go on sale in cycles. They are most likely to be on sale when they are in season, so for example, I buy and eat lots of sweet corn in the summer and lots of strawberries in late spring/early summer, lots of pumpkin products in the fall. If nothing is on sale, bananas are usually a good bet :)

Even out of season, fruits and veggies randomly go on sale. Green grapes must be in season somewhere because they have been going on sale like mad in the past month!

I’m happy to see that Food Lion has their $.99 per pound green grapes on sale this week again, through Tuesday, April 3rd. What a great deal! Grapes can be so expensive, sometimes $2.79-$2.99 per pound- I refuse to buy them when not on sale. I paid $2.10 for 2.13 pounds of grapes this morning; not on sale they would have been $5.30.

I want to thank Karin R. for reminding me that grapes can be frozen and that they are such a nice treat, especially when it’s hot. I plan to try that today! Also, she had another great idea- use them as ice cubes! Freeze them and then pop them into your favorite drink (I made lemonade this morning). Once your drink is gone you have a nice, sweet grape to eat!

How I Got an almost FREE Turkey from Food Lion!

Waiting until the last minute paid off for me today, as I was able to take advantage of two deals that Food Lion was running this week and put them both together to equal an almost FREE turkey!

I had to combine two promotions to make it work, but they were both easy to do.

Food Lion Promo Number One:

This week (through Thursday night) at Food Lion, if you buy $35 worth of products, you can get special pricing on a FROZEN Jennie-O turkey. Instead of the regular price, you can get it for $.47 a pound. That’s a SUPER good deal.

Food Lion Promo Number Two:
If you buy $15 worth of Unilver Products, you will get $5 off any turkey purchase in the store, whatever brand.

If you buy $30 worth of Unilver Products, you will get $10 off any turkey purchase in the store, whatever brand.
The discount comes off automatically at the register.

In case you didn’t know, Unilever makes products such as Ragu, Knorr Pasta and Rice Sides, Dove, Skippy, Hellmans, and many more. See the Food Lion ad to see which products qualify.

So, I combined both promos in order to get the free turkey. What I did was:

I bought $35 worth of products inside of Food Lion, some groceries that I needed and also some things that I needed for my Thanksgiving Dinner, such as sweetened condensed milk, French’s Onions (had coupons for both), some ham for my son’s Kindergarten Thanksgiving Party (Deli Ham is on sale right now at Food Lion for $3.98 per pound), ground beef, and other random things that I needed.

I then did the $15 worth of Unilever items promotion. I bought 15 Knorr Pasta and Rice Sides (on sale for $1.00 each) and since they counted towards the promotion, I got $5 off my turkey.

Well, my almost 12 pound turkey, which was originally $19.03, was discounted to $5.39 since I spent $35 inside of Food Lion.

Then, I got $5.00 off of it, since I bought the Unilever products! This made the turkey only $.39!!!! I tried to find a smaller turkey so that I could get it for free, but the one I got was one of the smallest. Anyhow, $.39 for a turkey is still a great deal!

This only works if you can manage to find some Unilever products that you actually would use. There are several to choose from. My kids like the Knorr Pasta and Rice sides and they are good when I need to whip up a quick side item. Sometimes I throw chicken breast in with the pasta or rice to make it more of a meal, so I didn’t mind buying 15 of them since they were on sale anyways.

I’m glad Food Lion did this deal this year because in years past they did the thing where you could get a free turkey if you bought a certain amount of groceries every week. I never did that because that was so hard to keep up with, plus I don’t normally shop Food Lion each week. This year’s offer was certainly better!

One last tip- it’s only the FROZEN Jennie-O turkeys that count for the $.47 per pound, so be sure to get in there and get it today or early tomorrow because you will still have to thaw it before it cooks!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!!!

Average Price of Milk and Cheese

In the October 2nd Wilmington Star News Newspaper, there was a short column on page 1E from Amanda Lisk on economic indicators, listing average prices for items. For the grocery section, prices were listed for two common items- milk and cheese. I found it very interesting to take a look at those prices and see how they compared to what I usually pay.

Milk- The Price Was Given for Milk Prices on September 29
1 Gallon Whole Milk
Food Lion: $4.49
Lowes Foods: $3.99
Harris Teeter: $3.99
Walmart: $3.98

Personally, I thought those prices were outrageous! Food Lion clearly has the highest price by $.50. If you were going through two gallons of milk per week, over the course of a year you would pay $52 extra dollars just on milk alone! Over ten years, you’d overspend by $520!

Those prices also go to show how much you will pay if you don’t buy on sale. I always buy milk on sale, so I never see those kind of prices. Harris Teeter tends to put it’s milk on sale every couple of weeks or so. It is currently on sale this week at Harris Teeter for $2.97 per gallon. What a big difference! That is $1.52 less than Food Lion’s quoted price and $1.01 less than Walmart’s quoted price.

Also, every Tuesday in October and through the first Tuesday in November, The Fresh Market grocer in Mayfaire is doing $2.99 Tuesdays. For only $2.99 you get a gallon of Hormone-free milk with a limit of four gallons. That’s a great deal for what is normally very expensive milk.

I always say when you see a deal to stock up! That way, you will have plenty until the next sale comes around so that you never have to pay those high prices listed above. Stocking up is a little more difficult to do with milk, although I have been told that it freezes well. A tip I was given is to pour a little out first before freezing so that it doesn’t burst in the freezer and to wait until completely thawed before drinking.

Truthfully, you could probably get away with not worrying about freezing milk and simply buying it on sale. Usually, milk will be on sale somewhere each week. Just wait for the sale and get enough gallons to last your family, keeping the expiration date in mind.

Finally, she listed American Cheese Single Slice Prices-store brand (16 slices-12 oz)

Food Lion: $2.39
Walmart: $2.36
Lowes Foods: $1.99
Harris Teeter: $1.97

Again, Food Lion wins award for highest price! Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods had pretty much the same price,, both around $.40 less than the others. This goes to illustrate something I often share in my workshops- that Walmart does not always have the lowest price. In Walmart’s defense, they do say they will price match if you bring in the other grocery store’s ad.

These prices from the article were on store brands, too. Imagine if they had been name brand and you used a coupon on the items at Lowes Foods and Harris Teeter. Those two stores would double your coupon, thus beating Walmart and Food Lion’s prices by far! I personally have found this to be the case more often than not. Contrary to popular belief, I tend to spend a lot less at Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods.

Certainly, there is nothing wrong with shopping at Walmart and Food Lion if you prefer. Just keep in mind that you are usually going to pay extra for the pleasure of shopping there!

Free Toothpaste at Food Lion Through Sunday!

Shannon, who took my workshop a week ago, e-mailed me with a tip for a great deal on toothpaste this weekend at Food Lion.

Food Lion is having a three day sale (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) for Crest Toothpaste for $1.50. There was a $.75 off coupon in the June 4th P&G insert, taking the toothpaste down to $.75.

It gets even better, though! Food Lion has digital coupons available on their website, where you can click and upload the coupon directly to your MVP card. There is also a digital coupon available for Crest for $.75, making the toothpaste FREE! (Remember, you CAN combine a digital coupon with a paper coupon).

It get even better still…..Shannon pointed out to me that she picked a box that had a bonus tube of toothpaste on the top AND inside there were $10 worth of coupons! What a great deal!

I did want to note that I tried this deal and for some reason, the digital coupon did not come off my total as it should have. I consulted with the manager, who had no idea what happened. I plan to return tomorrow to see if I can get the deal to work, but honestly, even if it doesn’t, it’s still a good deal to pay $.75 for the toothpaste (plus tax).

Thanks Shannon for the great tip!

Exciting National Geographic Promotion at Lowes Food and Food Lion

The new grocery store deals started today and there are a lot of great deals out there this week! One deal that I can’t wait to do is the Proctor and Gamble/National Geographic Promotion going on THIS WEEK ONLY at Lowes Foods and Food Lion.

It’s simple- at Food Lion, when you buy $25 worth of Proctor and Gamble Products and you automatically get a free subscription to both National Geographic AND National Geographic Kids magazine! At Lowe’s Foods if you spend the $25, you can have your choice of one magazine or the other. A redemption form for the magazines will print out for you at the register. The ad says that the magazines alone are worth $120 value. Obviously that’s a little inflated but I do know that those two magazines are not cheap. My husband loves National Geographic and I think my son will enjoy the kids version, so I plan to get this deal tomorrow.

The great thing is that Proctor and Gamble makes so many products that it won’t be hard to find $25 worth of something. Pantene, Pampers, Pull Ups, Dawn, Cascade, and Prilosec are just a few of the brands that qualify. The complete list can also be found in this week’s grocery store ad, so be sure to look it over when you go into the grocery store. Proctor and Gamble also makes Charmin toilet paper and Bounty Paper towels, so this would be a good week to stock up on those types of items. Many of the Proctor and Gamble items are on sale this week, too.

Even better is that you can use coupons on all of the items to bring down the total cost. In other words, as long as you spend $25 pre-coupon, you will still get the free magazines! How awesome is that?!

I plan to go to Food Lion tomorrow so I can get both magazines; I will update tomorrow to let you know how I did!
