Local Food Pantry Running Low

There was an article in the Star News Online on Friday about Mother’s Hubbard, a local food pantry in downtown Wilmington. According to the article, the pantry is running low on food and seven of their ten freezers are empty. The pantry has dropped from receiving 20,000 pounds of food in February to only 4,000 pounds of food so far in October. Many of the families that come in for help are new to the pantry and have not been in the situation of needing food before. We all know that food prices have been increasing.

I know many of us are quite adept at our couponing. If you see a good deal on an item or if you have extra food stockpiled that you may not need, the food pantry might make a great home for it. Also consider that you may be able to write off the donations on your taxes, possibly claiming the value of the food rather than what you paid for it. Definitely speak to your accountant for details on exactly how that would work for you.

If you want to donate, the pantry is located downtown at 221 Second Street and takes donations from 2-3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
