CVS vs. Walmart: Halloween Candy

Sign up for my FREE newsletter to get the best grocery deals in your inbox!

Earlier in the week I showed how you could get Halloween candy at CVS for as little as $.33 per bag! That deal was by using their sale plus coupons.

But let’s pretend for a second that you have no coupons and are not really interested in using any. Walmart would be the better deal in that case, right?

Think again! I went there yesterday to check prices and found Mars & Hershey’s Fun Size Candy bags at Walmart for $2.50 each.

Those same bags are $1.88 at CVS.

If you use coupons, the gap widens even more because CVS has store coupons that you can use on the candy in addition to manufacturer’s coupons that you have. That is how I was able to get candy so cheap at CVS this week. Walmart does not have store coupons. See here for more info on that.

Usually grocery and drug store sales beat or equal Walmart’s prices. This happens time and time again. I showed it earlier today with my post about Food Lion.

To be fair, I do have to tell you that Walmart will price match the $1.88 candy since it’s a CVS advertised price. They would also reimburse you with the difference via their Savings Catcher App. Both of those programs are great options if CVS happens to run out of their $1.88/bag candy, which is certainly a possibility at that price.

Finally, when it comes to saving the most on candy a general rule is that if you are using coupons, the smaller bags are the better bet. Why? You can use more coupons. For example, if you buy two, big $14 bags of candy and you have a coupon for $1 off 2 bags, you will only use one coupon and save just $1. But if you bought 8 smaller bags of candy for $1.88 each, you could use 4 of your $1 off 2 bags coupons which would save $4 off, making the total $11.04 for eight bags. You’d have to compare the ounces but there is a good chance that 8 smaller bags will be more ounces of candy than your $14 bag of candy which would still cost you $13.50 after the coupon.

Target also has a really great deal on Halloween candy this week. The bags are bigger but after stacking coupons, the price comes out close to the CVS price.

$.99 Lucky Charms Cereal at Harris Teeter

lucky charms

I have been waiting all month for this deal to show up! Ever since October 1st we had this fantastic $.50 off 1 box of Lucky Charms coupon. I printed the coupon but have been holding it, waiting for a good sale.

FINALLY, Lucky Charms are B1G1 free this week at Harris Teeter so this is the time to use the coupon! Print up to two copies per computer if you really want to stock up.

Buy: 1 Box of Lucky Charms Cereal, 11 oz., $1.99
Use: $.50/1 printable coupon (Harris Teeter doubles this)
Final Price: $.99

It is VERY important that you print this coupon now. Why? Nov. 1st the printable coupons switch out and it may no longer be available. The sale will still be going on but if you didn’t print the coupon you just may be out of luck.

Help! I Missed the $10 off $50 Coupon in Wednesday’s Paper!

Click here for a LONG list of Harris Teeter Deals and Freebies this Week!

Everytime Harris Teeter gives out a coupon like this, I get emails from people who want to know what to do since they missed the $10 off $50 Harris Teeter Coupon that was in many cities’ Wednesday Newspapers.

It was such a great coupon because it can be used at Harris Teeter or Lowes Foods and since it’s valid on almost everything in the store, it could be used to stock up on meat, paper products, great deals or produce.

It is only valid through next Tuesday night, Nov. 4th so act fast if you want to take advantage of this.

Here are a few ideas for you if you missed out:

1. Call your local newspaper office- In my city (Wilmington, NC) the newspaper office keeps old copies of newspapers. You have to pay regular price for them but you can drop in during business hours to pick up a newspaper that you may have missed. They are usually closed on weekends, though. I recommend calling to ask first.

2. Check with a neighbor. In my cul-de-sac, only two houses subscribe to the paper. Me (for the coupons) and a nice, older coupon in their 70’s/80s. I know it’s hard to believe for us couponers, but there are some people who actually read the newspaper, lol….This couple never uses the coupons and they are usually happy to give them to me if I request it.

3. Check businesses that get the paper. Try a local hotel, coffee shop, restaurant, school, workplace or doctor’s office. Also, some folks have success going to the library. They may not have thrown away their Wednesday newspapers, yet.

4. Ask inside of Harris Teeter. Sometimes they have the $10 coupon sitting behind the counter! In fact, in the past I had a cashier take someone else’s coupon from the drawer and scan it for me when I spent at least $50. Also, you could drop by customer service before you shop and ask if they have any extra $10 coupons.

5. Dumpster Diving. I’m not really suggesting this because it’s illegal in most cities. BUT…if you know the owner of a recycling bin,  you could ask if they have newspapers in it and you could check.

Do you have any other suggestions? Share them on the Delly’s Deals Facebook page!

and always check here before you shop!

When it comes to retail sales, this is one case where you do not want to be stingy with giving your email out! One of the best ways to save on retail is to sign up for your favorite store’s e-mailing list. You will be emailed whenever they are having a sale and they also email tons of coupons, too, almost weekly. Some people even create a separate email just for their coupons to avoid clutter in your personal or work email.

In addition, make sure you provide your physical or mailing address, too. I get tons of great coupons in the mail almost every week. Finally, check your local paper on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. It varies by chain but there are usually coupons in the newspaper for retail stores on the weekends.

Walmart vs. Food Lion- Doritos

I was in Walmart yesterday to check prices and to attempt getting a free Eco Tools Sponge (unfortunately, the deal did not work out, which is typical for Walmart, lol…).

I noticed that Walmart had a display of Doritos chips and prominently highlighted the “sale” price which was $2.98.

Well, the same size Doritos are part of Food Lion’s 3 day sale this week and they are just $1.98. That is a whole dollar less! Even after the 3-day sale ends, Doritos will be $2.50, which is still less than Walmart’s price.

In Walmart’s defense, they will price match this since it’s an advertised price, but only if you TELL them at the register. And cross your fingers and hope that your Walmart cashier is in a good mood when you request the price match, lol….Also, Walmart has a new program, Savings Catcher, that is supposed to catch lower prices and then refund you the difference onto an e-gift card. Honestly, I am not a fan of this program because you still have to pay more money out of your pocket and then HOPE that Walmart’s Savings Catcher refunds you. Why not just go to Food Lion and get the Doritos for less from there?

This proves a point that I make over and over- grocery store sale prices almost always beat Walmart’s prices. If you commit to buying on sale at the grocery store instead of Walmart, you will pay less overall on your groceries and really begin to see your grocery bill drop.

The best news is that grocery stores are ALWAYS running thousands of items on sale. So it is really not hard to buy on sale at the grocery store. Trust me, there is plenty to choose from.

See the other Food Lion 3-Day sale items below. You have through Friday night, Oct. 30 to get these deals!
