Yesterday I was honored to have the opportunity to tour the new Publix grocery store opening tomorrow at the corner of Bragg St. and College Road in Wilmington, NC (Monkey Junction area)! *Ogden shoppers will have to wait another year before the Publix opens on our side of town 🙂 I was already looking forward to our city’s first Publix store but now that I’ve seen it, I am super pumped about the arrival of Publix!
The store opens Wed. August 10th at 7 a.m. I have been unofficially told that there will be giveaways for the first customers but I was not given specifics on that. I do know there are gift bags in the pharmacy area; I got one yesterday and it had great items in it. They will also be doing lots of sampling and handing out Publix reusable bags.
Since most of us are new to shopping at Publix, I decided to do a post about the top 10 things to love about Publix stores! Here you will find savings tips and other perks you’ll get as a Publix customer.
Reason #1- No store cards required
Like at Walmart or Trader Joe’s, you do not need a card to get the Savings at Publix. This is different from many area grocery stores. This means that any sales you see in the store apply to every customer, regardless of whether you have a special savings card.
Reason #2- Baby Club
Sign up for their baby club to get special gifts (such as a $20 book from the American Academy of Pediatrics), as well as special coupons each month and tips on baby and child care. I also was told unofficially that you get a free Patty Cake for your child’s first birthday but I could not find this info in the baby club flyer.
Reason #3- FREE Prescriptions (select antibiotics, blood pressure meds and diabetic drugs)
Select prescriptions for high blood pressure, diabetic meds or antibiotics are FREE, no strings attached! This is part of Publix’ free medications program. There are no membership fees or registrations; just take your prescriptions to Publix and they will take care of the rest!
Reason #4- Publix Aprons Program
In-store, each day, the Publix Aprons program will demo a breakfast, lunch and dinner item that you can sample and learn how to cook. All the ingredients you need will be right there, available for you to pick up and take home and make for your family! Some cities also have Publix Aprons cooking classes that you can register for; not sure if our location will have that.
Reason #5- Many Sales Items & B1G1 FREE
Publix offers many great sales items. Their sales cycle runs from Wednesday to Tuesday and I noticed lots of B1G1 (BOGO) FREE items (do not have to buy both- 1 rings up at half price). See them on their website here. There are some special sales that will be going on for our area only to celebrate the grand opening, so be sure to grab a flyer when you walk in.
I will also share a Publix deals list each week but keep in mind that this list is based out of Raleigh Publix stores so it may not include all the deals from our local store.
(see deal list matched to coupons at the bottom of the page)
Reason #6- Double Your Savings with Publix Store Coupons
This is the part I’m excited about! Unfortunately, Publix does not double coupons. BUT….they do allow you to stack their store coupons with manufacturer’s coupons! This accomplishes close to the same thing as doubling coupons, since you’re getting to save twice on the same item.
Here’s one example I saw that you can do this week:
Publix (through 8/19, 2016):
Buy: (1) Juicy Juice Splashers, 10 ct.- $2.50
Use: $0.55/1 Juicy Juice product from May 22 Smart Source
Also Use: $1.00/1 Juicy Juice Splashers 10 pack coupon from Publix back to school flyer
Final Price: $0.95
Harris Teeter (regular doubles) (through 8/23):
Buy: (1) Juicy Juice Splashers, 10 ct.- $2.50
Use: $0.55/1 Juicy Juice product from May 22 Smart Source- coupon doubles
Final Price: $1.40
*Or it would be $0.85 at Triple coupons, but Triples is a rare event that we only see once a year or so at Harris Teeter
So you can see how combining Publix coupons with manufacturer’s coupons can save you a lot of money! It came out cheaper than Harris Teeter double coupons!
Where do I find Publix coupons?
(they look like this and say Publix on them):
They’re everywhere! First look at the information kiosk at the front of the store or ask customer service for their current coupon booklet. They put out Publix coupon books regularly, about twice a month. I found two booklets yesterday. Also, check their website at publix.com/savings AND sometimes there are Publix coupons in the Sunday paper.
Reason #7- Buy Theirs Try Ours FREE
I wasn’t allowed to take photos but I was trying my best to remember everything I saw, lol…. On an end-cap near the baby aisle I saw a ton of “buy theirs get ours free” deals for a number of baby products. For example, buy Huggies diapers and get a pack of Publix diapers free. Another was for Johnson’s baby wash, Clorox antibacterial wipes and baby wipes. I will get a pic of these tomorrow. But I was thinking you could do a deal on the Huggies where you use a $2.00 Huggies coupon to save on the Huggies and then also get a free package of Publix diapers.
Reason #8- Publix digital coupons
Everyone is different and while I love using physical coupons to save, I understand not everyone does. Sign up for Publix digital coupons, click the coupons you want and then give your phone number at the register and the coupons will come off your total. This is great for busy people OR people who always seem to forget paper coupons (like my brother). He wants to save, but he’s just never going to use paper coupons, no matter how much I tell him about it 🙂
Reason #9- Publix Gives Back
Publix has a long history of giving back to it’s employees, specifically in the form of company stock. Each employee is an owner of Publix stock and in fact, some have retired millionaires just on the Publix stock they’ve been given (no employee contribution is required). Read this fascinating story about that topic (specifically the man who started as a bagger in high school and took an early retirement after cashing in his Publix stock for over $1,000.000). The founder, George Jenkins believed that “giving back to others was not an expense but an investment, responsibility and privilege.” Publix has been quoted to be an extremely generous company to work for; they also offer full reimbursement for college expenses, up to $23,000 per year.
Publix also donates to the local community. They gave 8 checks of $500 each to all elementary schools within a certain mile radius of their new store in Monkey Junction.
Reason #10- Extreme Emphasis on Customer Service
Publix has a 100% guarantee policy so if you’re not happy you will get your money back. Their employees receive 3 weeks of customer service training and everyone I have spoken with is blown away by the customer service they received at Publix. Several of the employees told me about how much training they have received and how customer satisfaction is emphasized above all.
One more Reason…..Competition
I didn’t list it as #11 because I didn’t want to ruin my top ten list, lol….
But actually, competition IS a good reason to love Publix. Every time a new grocery store comes to our area, we start getting coupons and special offers from competing stores. Harris Teeter has been very proactive by placing coupons in the newspaper on Wednesdays (Publix is coming into NC full-force) and Harris Teeter seems to have upped the game with multiple special events, including Triple Coupons starting tomorrow. Last year when Walmart opened in Ogden, I got $10 off coupons for eight weeks from Harris Teeter! Keep your eyes peeled for coupons in your mailbox, email and in the local newspaper!
